VA interested in advanced communication technology

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs recently put out a request of information in an effort to collect industry input on how best to move its telephone infrastructure into a cloud-based unified communications network.

Veterans Affairs is looking to integrate its traditional telecommunications functions and systems with digital-based communication. It aims to launch all communications including instant messaging, video conferencing solutions, email and telephony services from a single platform. The department wants the new communication system to adapt to its future need and reduce its overall IT costs associated with the maintenance of its communication system.

In addition, the U.S. Department of Defense is investing more than $10 million in contracts to advance its communication technology. The department is purchasing cutting-edge, ultra-wide-angle camera systems to be used for homeland security purposes. The 360-degree cameras work with video conferencing services to deliver real-time situational awareness to the crews of combat vehicles, navy ships and submarines, and to the operators of robotic platforms. Using the cameras in conjunction with video conferencing services, users can increase the effectiveness and safety of their missions, GSN Magazine reported.
