Six months ago, the Russell County Sheriff's Office in Alabama started working on its jail expansion project to improve the legal and corrections departments in the county, and the workers are already ahead of schedule. The $2.9 million expansion, which includes the construction of a new facility that will add roughly 13,000-square-feet of extra area, is expected to be completed before the August 2012 deadline.
Russell County news source WLTZ reported the project also calls for a complete renovation of the existing jail building, such as making major repairs to the kitchen. Video conferencing services and tools are also being deployed in the new facility, allowing inmates to communicate with judges and attend hearings without having to leave the jail, the source reported.
The use of video conferencing in the jail will decrease costs associated with transport and safety of inmates to and from the courthouse, and improve the safety of law enforcement officials in charge of moving the inmates for hearings. Inmates will also be able to use video services to communicate while in prison. The video conferencing solutions will connect inmates with their lawyers, friends, family members and even other inmates virtually, Alabama news source WRBL reported.
